1. Set goals: for example "500 users at once, pages under 2 seconds, errors under 1%."
2. Model real behaviour: which pages users hit and in what ratio.
3. Build scripts in JMeter or k6 with realistic data.
4. Run tests on staging or, with care, on production at a quiet time.
5. Analyse results with server metrics and APM tools.
6. Report and retest: fixes listed by impact, then a second run to prove the improvement.

The 6 Most Common Bottlenecks We Find

1. Slow database queries with missing indexes.
2. No caching for pages or API responses that rarely change.
3. Large images and scripts on the front end.
4. Too few PHP-FPM or Node workers for the traffic.
5. Calls to third-party APIs that block the page.

Test Performance Yourself or Hire Experts?

Free tools like PageSpeed Insights show front-end speed. They don't tell you what happens when 1,000 people log in together. Teams testing alone often run the test from one laptop (which becomes the bottleneck), use fake traffic patterns, or read averages that hide slow requests.
